Module Two

Learning Goals

  1. Understand that primary literature can be used as a tool to teach the nature and practices of science
  2. Understand the underlying philosophy of "A Framework for K-12 Science Education," the three dimensions, and how these relate to the nature of science
  3. Understand how the redesign of the AP science standards emphasizes disciplinary practices, and the underlying philosophy is rooted in the premise that this is important not only for future scientists but for developing scientifically-literate citizens
  4. Identify similarities across the AP and Framework standards, and relate those back to the nature of science

Summary

In Module Two, trainees are introduced to Advanced Placement (AP) Practices and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Science and Engineering Practices. At the start and completion of the module, trainees will complete a modeling frameworks activity where they must rearrange the AP Practices, NGSS Practices, and Nature of Science (NOS) standards in a graphic organizer of their choosing (i.e., web chart, flowchart, matrix, etc.) to visualize the differences and similarities between the four standards and practices. The goal of this activity is to show trainees how AP, NGSS, and NOS overlap and have similar goals for students. The module focuses on having trainees read articles, watch videos, and answering guided questions to learn more about AP and NGSS.

In the discussion board below, please upload a copy of your STEM Ed Frameworks POST-MODULE model. You must be logged in to post a comment. The image must be a JPG or PNG file. For information on taking a screenshot of your model, see here

Explore models from other participants. Are they similar? Notice any common threads? Would you add/remove anything? How does it relate to what you've learned about the scientific method (both in your own work and in school)? Be sure to leave a reply on at least one other person's model.
