FAQs: Frequently asked questions

Looking for answers on how to complete this course? Before emailing us, please see if your question is answered below.

What is SitC?
Science in the Classroom (SitC) is a collection of freely available annotated research papers. SitC aims to help educators, undergraduates, and advanced high school students understand the research contained in scientific primary literature by using annotations and providing accompanying teaching materials.

Why participate in this course?
This course seeks to familiarize pre-service and current educators with annotated primary literature, strengthen their understanding of the nature of science, and discuss promising practices for using annotated primary literature in the classroom.

Who sees my response in Qualtrics?
Qualtrics is a simple, web-based survey tool we use to conduct course evaluations and other data collection activities related to this course. All responses are private and only SitC staff can see responses.

Do I need to download Java for the simulations?
Physics Education Technology or PhET Simulations are interactive science and mathematics simulations used in classrooms across the country. PhET simulations provide students and educators the opportunity to explore scientific and mathematic concepts that would be considered expensive, dangerous, and/or impossible to study in a real and live setting. Before beginning, this course, you can download the latest version of Java.

Which modules have required discussion board posts?
The Discussion Board can be found after each module. Comments on the discussion board are required for Modules Two, Three, and Four (Part 1). On Module Three, please note that there are two prompts that require discussion board posting.

How do I add my concept map to the discussion?
The platform we use for the discussion board only accepts PNG and JPEG/JPG files. Instead of uploading the full PowerPoint file, please save the individual slide as a JPG or PNG. If you are having difficulties, you can also please take a screenshot of your concept map and save it as a JPEG or PNG file.

How do I submit and receive credit for my completed SitC educator guide?
Please email, SitC staff at scienceeducation@aaas.org
