Becoming a Contributor for Science in the Classroom
Prerequisites/Capabilities:
- Must be working on or have completed a graduate degree in a science discipline
- Must be able to understand the science, methods, and analysis methods used in the paper you select
- Must be able to translate advanced science writing and terms into language appropriate for an advanced high school or undergraduate level
Training needed:
- A short phone call with the Project Director is needed for orientation
- Orientation will cover what is specifically required for a complete annotation
Resources available:
- Online access to the Science website and archives will be provided.
A completely annotated Science paper includes:
- writing glossary terms
- expanding on background information
- describing experimental methods (including any analysis techniques)
- explaining conclusions
- connecting to outside news stories or related Reviews/Perspectives from Science
- connecting the paper to the appropriate learning standards
- detailing why selected references are necessary to include
- developing an an additional activity (with a tutorial) to accompany the Science paper
Time requirements:
- Average time requirement is ~10 hours of work over the course of two months, dispersed as necessary.
Deadline:
- All annotations should be completed within 2 months of selecting a paper. Any files incomplete at 2 months may be subject to being closed.
